DESCRIPTION:A lot of the talk about concurrency in Perl 6 so far has focuse
 d on primarily functional constructs: promises\, which represent a piece o
 f computation that will produce a value at some point in the future\, and 
 supplies\, which represent computations that asynchronously produce many v
 alues over time. These are both desirable models. The latter is especially
  powerful\, since every mutable object you write can be re-designed in ter
 ms of a stream of immutable events.\n\nWhile functional approaches emphasi
 zing immutability are a very natural fit for concurrent situations\, somet
 imes an OO approach will simply capture the problem a lot more elegantly t
 han a stream of events can. The OO approach to concurrency is not to elimi
 nate mutation\, but rather to keep it within a boundary. Good OO design\, 
 with appropriate use of data-hiding and following principles such as "tell
 \, don't ask"\, allow us to reason about state\, and in turn employ a stra
 tegy that keeps it safe under concurrent operations.\n\nIn this session I'
 ll quickly recap OO\, data hiding\, and the notions of thread safety and t
 ransactionality. I'll then look through some different ways OO and concurr
 ency can be put together. Finally\, I'll look at a design that brings the 
 object and event worlds together.

DESCRIPTION:Systems biology is an established field of biology-based resear
 ch that combines approaches of multiple scientific areas\, such as molecul
 ar biology\, biomechanics\, mathematics\, systems theory\, and computer sc
 ience. Because of the complexity of the investigated biological systems\, 
 analytical methods are often only of limited use in systems biology. When 
 analytical approaches fail\, computer simulations are usually applied to g
 ain further insight into the systems of interest. Although Perl is not a p
 rogramming language that is known for its strengths in real-time or high-p
 erformance applications\, Perl can be of invaluable help in numerical simu
 lations. In particular\, Perl is excellently suited for pre- and post-proc
 essing tasks\, and for developing proof-of-principle applications of new n
 umerical methods.\nFurthermore\, Perl is also a great tool to implement wr
 apper programs to offer an easy and fail-proof access to specialized libra
 ries and to automatize the execution of large sets of simulations which an
 alyze the behavior of systems for huge parameter sets.\n\nIn my talk I am 
 planning to present some examples of how Perl has been successfully applie
 d to enable the execution of numerical simulations in the field of systems
  biology:\na) An object oriented Perl program that 'computationally seeds'
  stem cells on the numerical representation of a protein scaffold.\nThis s
 caffold was used to simulate the physical properties which occur in a flow
  perfusion bioreactor that is used to grow artificial human bone tissue.\n
 b) A Perl program that is used to compute the best genetic intervention st
 rategy which transforms microorganisms into efficient produces of biofuel 
 (e.g. ethanol) and pharmaceuticals.\nc) A Perl program that automatizes th
 e computations of the dielectric properties of lab-on-a-chip systems in or
 der to optimize their sensitivity to detect biological cells.

 tion for CPAN modules. Initially I targetted the popular modules\, but rec
 ently\, I have been extending cpancover.com to provide coverage of all of 
 CPAN.\n\nPreviously\, when a module caused problems (for example\, by goin
 g into an endless loop) I simply removed it from the list of modules to co
 ver. Now I need to handle that situation and\, after a couple of false sta
 rts\, I settled on using docker to constrain the resources of any module's
  coverage run.\n\nIn this talk I will explain how I have done this.

DESCRIPTION:In five years' time\, what programming language will I be using
 ? How about in ten?\n\nPredicting the future is always hard. Right now\, I
  think that it's particularly difficult\, although some things are clear. 
 The problem is that none of the current leaders have the right genes for w
 hat the future is going to throw at us\, and of those chasing that do look
  like they have what it takes to last the course\, it's not obvious that a
 ny of them will eventually emerge the winner.\n\nIn this talk I'll give my
  considered opinions from observing the trajectories of "competitor" langu
 ages to Perl\, including why half of them seem to be forking (even if they
  weren't meaning to)\, and why it's unclear how any of them are going to c
 ope well in the interesting times that are coming our way soon.\n\nIn this
  talk there will be KNOWN KNOWNS and KNOWN UNKNOWNS. I'll miss out the UNK
 NOWN UNKNOWNS for obvious reasons. I can't promise to rigidly define the a
 reas of doubt and uncertainty\, but I'll do my best.

DESCRIPTION:We run lots of applications on lots of machines. Many written i
 n Perl but many not.\n\nIn this talk I'll be exploring how we've evolved t
 he logging step by step to the point where we now capture\, forward\, and 
 store all log messages from all applications on all machines into an Elast
 icsearch cluster. The powerful Kibana GUI makes searching fast\, simple an
 d powerful.\n\nAnd not just applications logs as we also log all TCP and H
 TTP traffic as well\, via haproxy.\n\nAlong the way we've learned many use
 ful lessons and a few tricks.\n\nFor Perl applications in particular I'll 
 be showing how we generate logs in JSON and automatically include extra 'c
 ontextual data' that make log messages much more useful. Got an uninitiali

 at happened.

 tests for the austrian registry. But really you could use this framework t
 o test pretty much anything if you want. (I am not saying you should!)\n\n
 In the beginning EPPlication was only capable of sending EPP calls (a XML 
 based protocol to communicate with registries) but that has changed and it
  can make all kinds of calls now. (REST\, SOAP\, SQL and SSH)\n\nTests are
  created by clicking together the various steps\n- setting a variable\n- s
 ending an EPP/SOAP/REST/SQL/... call\n- extracting data from a previous re
 mote call\n- validating a variable\n- ...\n- reusing/encapsulating steps i
 n modules\n\n\nSo it's kind of a graphical programming language.\n\nRunnin
 g a test can be done either by clicking a button (useful during test\ndeve
 lopment) or by using a command line interface that communicates with\nthe 
 framework RESTfully. The latter can be used to run tests automatically\nvi
 a cronjob or even as a CI system.\n\nTest results can be viewed in the bro
 wser\, a search function helps you to\nfind the interesting parts of a tes
 t result. The Command Line Interface also\nreceives a short summary of the
  test result.\n\nAfter a couple of days the test results (which are stored
  in a DB) are\nwritten to disk and deleted from the DB.\n\nTests can run i
 n parallel\, we are currently testing 10+ TLDs at the same\ntime. Processe
 s are forked (using Child.pm) and tasks are distributed\nusing a message q
 ueue (ZeroMQ).\n\nThe EPPlication codebase is very DRY\, configurable and 
 well\ntested. It uses Catalyst\, DBIX::Class\, Template::Toolkit\,\nHTML::
 FormHandler\, JQuery and Bootstrap3 as web stack.
